Dalai Lama Tweets

The Dalai Lama tried to hold a rare direct conversation with people inside China on Friday, answering questions live on Twitter about the fate of Tibet. The hourlong session with the exiled Tibetan spiritual leader was conducted by Wang Lixiong, a Chinese writer and convert to Tibetan Buddhism who lives in Beijing and who met the Dalai Lama for Friday’s online conversation in a hotel room in New York, where the Dalai Lama is visiting. Through a Chinese interpreter, the Dalai Lama sent messages criticizing China’s policies toward Tibet and words of welcome to Chinese citizens. Twitter is blocked in China, but has become popular with thousands of Chinese, especially activists, who find a way around controls. Mr. Wang’s Twitter feed, where the conversation was posted, had more than 8,000 followers as of Friday night.

Prayer wheels have been used by Buddhists for praying, meditation, healing, purifying karma and protection from negativities. Some of the most advanced Buddhist Masters such as Padmasambhava, Marpa and Mahasiddhas such as Tilopa, Naropa and Nagarjuna used and distributed prayer wheels to benefit sentient beings and to protect the environment especially of sincere Dharma practitioners.

Turning a prayer wheel creates extensive benefits for all beings because prayer wheels are the manifestation of the Chenrezig, Buddha of Compassion, holy speech. As a holy object, a prayer wheel has tremendous power to eliminate the self-cherishing mind that keeps us from realizing perfect bodhichitta and thus reaching enlightenment. By turning a prayer wheel with a motivation of compassion for all beings and reciting the mantra OM MANI PEME HUNG you will accumulate extensive merit and purify obstacles.

These Prayer Wheels are handmade by Galgamani, Israel.

Dalai Lama - Obama Meeting Results

Two Nobel Peace laureates hold White House talks, despite Chinese warnings.

Every sitting U.S. president has met with the Dalai Lama since George H. W. Bush in 1991, with then-president George W. Bush awarding the leader the Congressional Gold Medal in a high-profile ceremony in 2007.

While Obama will not appear in public with the Dalai Lama and, like his White House predecessors, will deny him the symbolism of meeting in the Oval Office, there are already signs that Sino-U.S. relations may be deteriorating since Obama’s November visit to China.

On the eve of the Dalai Lama’s visit, White House spokesman Robert Gibbs insisted the United States and China — the world’s largest and third-biggest economies — have a “mature relationship” capable of withstanding disagreements.

Beijing said it was “strongly dissatisfied” about the meeting and expected Washington to take steps to put bilateral relations back on a healthy course. Read more »

Obama Decided to Meet Dalai Lama Despite Chinese Warnings

NY Times - U.S. President Barack Obama still plans to meet the Dalai Lama, the White House said on Tuesday, despite China’s warning that such a meeting would hurt ties already strained by U.S. weapons sales to Taiwan.

Digging in on two points of discord, China vowed to impose unspecified sanctions against U.S. companies selling arms to Taiwan and said any meeting between Obama and the exiled Tibetan Buddhist leader would hurt bilateral ties.

The White House shrugged off Beijing’s warning.

“The president told China’s leaders during his trip last year that he would meet with the Dalai Lama and he intends to do so,” White House spokesman Bill Burton told reporters travelling with Obama to New Hampshire.

“We expect that our relationship with China is mature enough where we can work on areas of mutual concern such as climate, the global economy and non-proliferation and discuss frankly and candidly those areas where we disagree.”

China has become increasingly vocal in opposing meetings between foreign leaders and the Dalai Lama, who Beijing deems a dangerous separatist. A meeting between the Tibetan leader and Obama would raise tensions between the world’s biggest and third-biggest economies.

Ties between the United States and China have also soured over trade and currency quarrels, cyber security and control of the Internet, and Beijing’s jailing of dissidents.

U.S. State Department spokesman P.J. Crowley said Washington wanted to “work through” disputes in various bilateral meetings the United States has with China.

“You have two of the most powerful nations on earth and our interests coincide in many areas and our interests collide occasionally in a handful of those,” he told reporters.
