Sand Mandala - Yamantaka Mandala - Day 11, Part 1

The last day of creating of the Yamantaka mandala in Sydney, December 2008.

Day 11, Part 1:

 Sand Mandala Day 11

The completed sand mandala of Yamantaka, made by monks of the Gyuto monastery, at Bondi pavilion December 14 2008.

 Sand Mandala Day 11

Detail of the outer ring of the mandala, representing samsara, ‘our’ world of pain, suffering (desire) and death - a naga serpent lives in the mountain protecting treasure, a stupa is there as well, perhaps representing the role of Buddhism in subduing the elemental forces, making them protectors of the dharma.

 Sand Mandala Day 11

Detail of the outer ring of the mandala, representing samsara, ‘our’ wrold of pain, suffering (desire) and death - a tiger is eating parts of a dismembered body, a decapitated body is nearby (a reference to the origin story of the buffalo-headed yamantaka), a yogini sits in meditation under an ashoka tree.

 Sand Mandala Day 11

Detail of the outer ring representing samsara. Note the naga serpent represented as within the mountain - in Tibetan tradition nagas were sometimes responsible for the placement of terma (sacred texts) in hidden places in the landscape - adepts would at some later stage find and reveal these teachings.

 Sand Mandala Day 11

Detail of the outer ring of the mandala, representing samsara - ‘our’ world of pain, suffering (desire) and death - everything within the ring of dorjes is the cosmos of the Buddhas.

 Sand Mandala Day 11

The sand mandala of Yamantaka, complete after eleven days of careful construction. This afternoon it will be ritually transformed, destroyed, to represent the impermanence of all things and to demonstrate the importance of non-attachment, central to the tenets of Buddhism.

 Sand Mandala Day 11

Visitors marvel at the finished mandala.
